The existing rooms posed many problems, not least of which was some interesting existing plumbing, a badly placed loft hatch, the need for more heating. We took back the two rooms to their bare stone walls, moved the soil pipe, took out and recreated new pipes, installed a new ceiling, and lighting. The whole project took an awful lot of consideration, and the ripping out phase took 3 weeks alone. At this point we could see we were left with some old stone walls, in places 2 feet deep, and some very odd plumbing.
The pipework phase also took some time to get right, and then we were able to fit a new lighting scheme, before walls we re-built, and the 2nd fixes could commence.
It was not plain sailing from here – but obstacles were over-come, and the resilience and patience of the family, and those who worked on the project have resulted in a beautiful, light space – with character bestowed by the choice of fittings, and a contemporary touch with horizontal panelling, installed by our master carpenters, and large format Carrara marble tiles from the wonderful team at Fired Earth Harrogate.
We have used antiques, from Chris Holmes in Knaresborough, and Anton & K, in The Cotswolds, to ensure this space has both character and heart.
