The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s latest film is the retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby; and it’s set to re-ignite our passion for all things 20’s and the beginning of Art Deco. The look is stylised, graphic, elegant and sexy – at once flowing and masculine.

One of our favourite examples of Art Deco style is Eltham Palace. Built in the 30’s by the wealthy Courtauld family next to the remains of Eltham Palace, childhood home of Henry VIII, it’s among the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in England.

An interview with Catherine Martin (production designer on the film), in last month’s Living Etc., reveals that Art Deco style isn’t just about mono chrome and graphics, ‘The period was far more eclectic than people realise. Sure there was geometrics and coved lighting, but also romantic florals’.

And our scheme for an Art Deco inspired bedroom – graphic wallpaper, mirrored furniture and glamourous accessories.
